Abstract
Bipolar disorder is a serious condition that adversely affects social, emotional, academic, and family functioning in children and adolescents with the disorder. Despite the severity of this illness, there is very little data to guide treatment decisions in the management of bipolar disorder in youth. The majority of information available about pharmacological treatments for bipolar disorder in children and adolescents relies upon open studies, case series, and case reports. In this article, data on medications for the treatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents are presented, and clinical recommendations are discussed.
