Dr. Thase joined the faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2007 as Professor of Psychiatry, bringing with him more than 27 years of distinguished service at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. He obtained his medical degree from Ohio State University in 1979 and completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic before joining the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine faculty in 1983.

Since 1987, Dr. Thase has directed the Depression Treatment and Research Program, establishing himself as one of the foremost experts in mood disorders research.
