Charles B. Nemeroff, MD, PhD

Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff serves as Editor Emeritus of Psychopharmacology Bulletin, having established the journal’s modern reputation for excellence as founding Editor-in-Chief following MedWorks Media’s acquisition from the National Institute of Mental Health in 1999. His visionary leadership transformed the publication into one of psychiatry’s most respected peer-reviewed journals.

Research Excellence & Scientific Leadership

Dr. Nemeroff is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to psychiatric research, particularly in the areas of mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and the neurobiology of psychiatric conditions. He currently serves as Director of the Institute for Early Life Adversity Research at Dell Medical School, where his research focuses on understanding the biological mechanisms underlying mental illness and developing innovative treatment approaches.

With Dr. Alan F. Schatzberg, he co-edited the Textbook of Psychopharmacology, now in its Fourth Edition and published by the American Psychiatric Press. This seminal work has become the definitive reference for psychiatric professionals globally. Dr. Nemeroff also served as Editor-in-Chief of Neuropsychopharmacology from 2001-2006, further cementing his role as a leader in psychiatric publishing.

Professional Recognition & Awards

Dr. Nemeroff’s exceptional contributions have earned him numerous prestigious awards throughout his career. Notable honors include the A.E. Bennett Award from the Society of Biological Psychiatry (1979), the Kempf Award in Psychobiology (1989) and Samuel Hibbs Award (1990) from the American Psychiatric Association, and both the Gold Medal Award and Research Prize (1996) from the Society of Biological Psychiatry.

His distinguished recognition continued with the Edward J. Sachar Award from Columbia University (1993), the Gerald Klerman Award from the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Disorders Association (1997), the Menninger Prize from the American College of Physicians (2000), and the Judson Marmor Award for Research (2008). In 2002, he was elected as a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

Academic Career

Dr. Nemeroff currently serves as Matthew P. Nemeroff Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin. Previously, he served as Leonard M. Miller Professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Born in New York City in 1949, he was educated in the New York City Public School System before graduating from the City College of New York in 1970. He received his Master’s degree in Biology from Northeastern University in 1973, followed by both his MD and PhD in Neurobiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
