Alan F. Schatzberg, MD

Dr. Alan F. Schatzberg is a distinguished member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Psychopharmacology Bulletin and one of the world’s leading authorities in the biology and psychopharmacology of depressive disorders. His groundbreaking research has shaped our understanding of mood disorders and transformed clinical practice in psychiatry.

Research Excellence

Dr. Schatzberg’s research focuses on norepinephrine systems in depression, the biological mechanisms underlying delusions in major depression, and innovative therapeutic strategies for treatment-resistant conditions. With over 700 publications to his credit, he has authored Schatzberg’s Manual of Clinical Psychopharmacology (2024 edition) with Dr. Charles DeBattista and co-edited the Textbook of Psychopharmacology (4th edition, 2009). He also co-authored The Black Book of Psychotropic Dosing and Monitoring, a premier clinical reference guide published by MedWorks Media. He serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Psychiatric Research.

Professional Recognition

Dr. Schatzberg has served as President of the American Psychiatric Association, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and the Society of Biological Psychiatry. His numerous awards include the 2002 American Psychiatric Association Award for Research, the 2014 Kraepelin Gold Medal, and the 2015 Gold Medal from the Society of Biological Psychiatry. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2003.

Academic Career

Dr. Schatzberg joined Stanford University in 1991 as the Kenneth T. Norris Jr. Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, serving as Department Chair until 2010. He currently directs the Stanford Mood Disorders Center. He received his medical degree from New York University in 1968 and completed his psychiatric residency at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center.
